What we tuned for this language
Nasal vowels
The vowel in the ordinary word for they has no English equivalent, and approximating it is instantly audible to a native speaker. It is in our Portuguese training data rather than substituted from a nearby sound.
Unstressed vowels
Portuguese reduces vowels away from the stress far more than Spanish does, which is why a Spanish model reading Portuguese sounds over-articulated. Ours learned the reduction from Portuguese speech.
Numbers and amounts
Amounts, dates and reference numbers are expanded into Portuguese words before synthesis, so a total is read as money and a date is read as a date.
