What we tuned for this language

  • The ř sound

It is close to unique to Czech, it appears in ordinary words including the country name, and models trained elsewhere substitute a rolled r. Ours learned it from Czech speech.

  • Vowel length

The acute accent marks a long vowel and changes the word, not the emphasis. Our normalizer preserves the diacritics and the model treats length as meaning rather than as expression.

  • Stress that never moves

Czech stress sits on the first syllable of every word, including borrowed ones. A model that carries English stress patterns into Czech sounds foreign in the first sentence.

FAQ

Czech text to speech: common questions

How many Czech voices are there?

This page plays 2 voices recorded natively in Czech. They are the Czech samples we have; the rest of the catalogue reaches Czech through the same 26-language Kugel 3 model.

Is ř pronounced correctly?

It is present in our Czech training data rather than approximated, which is what the samples above are there to demonstrate. Judge it by ear before you build on it.

Can we deploy it ourselves?

Yes. The model runs on your own hardware with the same API as the hosted service, which is how customers with strict data-residency rules use it.
